8. Detroit, Michigan USA

Detroit

Ever since the city declared bankruptcy in 2013, it quickly became one of the United States Murder Capitals. Once known as the glorious Motor City, the decline of the automotive industry in the US left a huge amount of people without a job. The population of Detroit dropped by more than 25% since 2000, leaving many parts of the city looking like a wasteland of foreclosed homes. Some people even decided to sell their house for less than a hundred dollars!

The city also has a huge problem with stray dogs, as tens of thousands can be found roaming the streets. If you really want to see how bad things are in Detroit, then you should check out truTV’s show Hardcore Pawn, which is set in the biggest pawn show in the Motor City, and shows a line of desperate people wanting to pawn everything they have just to keep their lights on and be able to pay their rent.

7. Ciudad Juarez, Mexico

ciudad-juarez

The city of Ciudad Juarez lies on the Rio Grande river, and is situated south of El Paso, Texas. There are 4 different international points of entry that connect the two cities. However, while El Paso is often regarded as the safest large city in the United States, the same can’t be said about Ciudad Juarez. The latter has unfortunately become the focal point of the Mexican drug war.

Ciudad Juarez was even named the murder capital of the world back in 2009, as there were 130 murders per every 100,000 inhabitants. But, many suggest that the number was even higher, since there were a lot of disappearances (or in other words, people being buried in mass graves) during the year. Since the situation is so brutal in the city, half of the police officers are too scared to do anything about it, while the other half is simply corrupt.
